The Voice is an American reality talent show on the NBC television network. Based on the reality singing competition The Voice of Holland, the series was created by Dutch television producer John de Mol[1] and is executive produced by Mark Burnett. It is part of an international series. The show's first season premiered on April 26, 2011 and ended on June 29, 2011, with Javier Colon being the show's first season's winner. The Voice proved to be a hit for NBC. The second season premiered February 5, 2012, immediately following NBC's broadcast of Super Bowl XLVI, and ended on May 8, 2012, with Jermaine Paul declared the winner.[2][3] The third season ran from September 10, 2012 to December 18, 2012, with Cassadee Pope becoming the winner.

The season four premiere is March 25, 2013. Cee Lo Green and Christina Aguilera leave in order to focus on their music careers, and are replaced by Usher and Shakira.

The series is part of The Voice franchise and is based on a similar competition format in the Netherlands entitled The Voice of Holland won by Ben Saunders. The first American series was hosted by Carson Daly, with Alison Haislip serving as the backstage and social networking correspondent. The winner received $100,000 and a record deal with Universal Republic Records (seasons 1–2), Universal Music Group (season 3). Daly and the entire judging panel returned for season two; however, Christina Milian replaced Haislip as the social media correspondent.

[edit] Format Promotional photograph of the coaches

The series consists of three phases: a blind audition, a battle phase, and live performance shows. Four judges/coaches, all noteworthy recording artists, choose teams of contestants through a blind audition process. Each judge has the length of the auditioner's performance (about ninety seconds) to decide if he or she wants that singer on his or her team. If two or more judges want the same singer (as happens frequently), the singer has the final choice of coach.

Each team of singers is mentored and developed by its respective coach. In the second stage, called the battle phase, coaches have two of their team members battle against each other directly by singing the same song together, with the coach choosing which team member to advance from each of individual "battles" into the first live round. Within that first live round, the surviving acts from each team again compete head-to-head, with public votes determining one of two acts from each team that will advance to the final six, while the coach chooses which of the remaining three acts comprises the other performer remaining on the team.

In the final phase, the remaining contestants compete against each other in live broadcasts for the public's vote. The coaches have the power to save one contestant that had not received the public's vote that week. As of season two, these contestants would give a last chance performance to win their coach's save. However, in deciding who moves on to the final four phase, the television audience and the coaches have equal say 50/50. With one team member remaining for each coach, the contestants compete against each other in the finale where the outcome is decided solely by public vote.

[edit] Development, production and marketing

In mid-December 2010, NBC announced its intention to bring an adaptation of The Voice of Holland to the United States. The series was originally named The Voice of America,[4] but when audition locations were announced a few days later, the title had already been shortened to The Voice.[5] In late February 2011, NBC began announcements of the coaches/judges for the series. First to sign on were Cee Lo Green and Adam Levine (frontman for Maroon 5).[6] Christina Aguilera came on board in early March 2011.[7] Blake Shelton was added as the final judge a few days later.[8] Carson Daly is the show's host.[9] Alison Haislip was announced as the show's "backstage online and social media correspondent".[10]

All four musician coaches of NBC's The Voice—Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton—returned for season two. In October 2011, Grammy Award nominated singer-actress Christina Milian was named as the new Social Media Correspondent.

The Voice premiered April 26, 2011, and delivered the highest 18–49 rating for a series premiere on a major broadcast network since Undercover Boss debuted after the Super Bowl in February 2010, according to updated "live plus same day" viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research. The show then grew in its second week in both adults 18–49 and total viewers from its strong premiere numbers of a week earlier, making it the first new primetime series on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox this season to increase from its first week to its second, according to updated "live plus same day" viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research.

The show later added singers Reba McEntire, Monica and Sia, and music producer Adam Blackstone, who joined the series as advisers to musician coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green and Christina Aguilera. for the "Battles" competition phase in season one.

Owing to the strong performance of The Voice, NBC offered expanded two-hour live episodes of the vocal competition show beginning June 7 (9–11 p.m. ET) following original episodes of America's top-rated summer show America's Got Talent (8–9 p.m. ET). NBC also added an extra results show to the series. The live season finale on Wednesday, June 29, 2011, included Stevie Nicks, Pat Monahan (lead singer of Train) and Ryan Tedder (lead singer of OneRepublic).

The Voice returned for season two on February 5, after the Super Bowl and from 8–10 p.m. ET, the regular time period debut of the show (6.7 rating, 17 share in adults 18–49, 17.8 million viewers overall) dominated the 8–10 p.m. ET time period, winning every half-hour in adults 18–49, adults 18–34, adults 25–54 and total viewers versus first-run competition on ABC, CBS, Fox and CW.

The Voice continued premiere on Monday delivered NBC's highest 18–49 rating in this time period, excluding Olympics, in nearly eight years (since February 16, 2004) and the network’s biggest overall non-Olympic viewership in the slot since January 15, 2007.

In addition, three premier advertisers signed on as official sponsors of season two. Kia Motors, Sprint and Starbucks Coffee Company will appear throughout the season in a series of on-air integrations, branding opportunities and extensive digital programs. All three sponsors will appear in The Voice's post Super Bowl episode.

During season two, the coaches enlisted multi-platinum singer-songwriters Alanis Morissette, Robin Thicke, Kelly Clarkson, Miranda Lambert, Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds, Ne-Yo, Jewel, and Lionel Richie to lend their knowledge and skills as advisers to six separate artists on Teams Adam (Levine), Blake (Shelton), Cee Lo (Green) and Christina (Aguilera) during the season's "battle rounds" phase of competition.

[edit] Music Releases and Voting System See also: List of successful singles from The Voice (U.S.)

In a first for a music competition series, NBC and Universal Republic Records offered fans of the show the ability to vote for their favorite artists by purchasing the studio versions of the songs that they perform on the live show each week via the iTunes Store. Alternative methods of voting can be done through toll-free phone calls and through online votes via NBC.com. Each method is limited to 10 votes per user.

As of the top 12 results show of season three, producers made changes in the voting system with regards to iTunes singles purchases. Previous voting via iTunes purchases of contestant performances had previously only counted singly during the official voting window and only accredited to the live show in concern. As of this week in the competition, if a competitor's performance charts within the Top 10 of the iTunes "Top 200 Singles Chart" during this window, it will be given an iTunes bonus that multiplies iTunes votes made in the 24-hour voting window by ten. The finale's vote count will have include a 'Cumulative iTunes Vote Total' of all singles (from top 12 onwards) purchased during and outside of the various voting windows, with iTunes bonus previously earned.[11]

Only the studio recording of the contestants' performances, not the live performance, are available on iTunes. In the first season, the battle rounds were recorded in the studio with both artists in the pairing. However, from season two onwards, only the winner's version of the song from the battle round is released. With the introduction of the Knockout Rounds in season three, where each contestant sang a separate song, only the winner's single is released.

The third season premiered on September 10, 2012. Early auditions, in front of producers, started in early March.[13] All original coaches remain. The team mentors have been decided as Mary J. Blige for Levine's team, Michael Bublé for Shelton's team,[14] Rob Thomas (lead singer of Matchbox Twenty) for Green's team,[15] and Billie Joe Armstrong (front man of Green Day) for Aguilera's team.[16] Producers have confirmed a few changes that have been implemented this season, to avoid having multiple singers deserving of being in the final four on the same team.[17] Each coach will be able to select 16 contestants, instead of 12, to be on their initial team. Then, during the battle rounds, each coach will have two 'steals' to pick up singers from another team. The knockout rounds follow, where the coaches pair up two singers who sing a song of their choice. The coach then eliminates one of the singers in each pair. Each coach will bring only five contestants to the live shows. For the first time of the series, when the coach will not be guaranteed a spot to the finals. This is the first season to feature three performers in the finale instead of four. The winner was Cassadee Pope from Team Blake. The runner-up was Terry McDermott with Nicholas David in third place.

The fourth season is scheduled to premiere on March 25, 2013 on NBC. It will be the first season with Shakira and Usher replacing Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green as judges.

[edit] Future seasons

The Voice is expected to have a fifth season with Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green returning as judges.[18]

[edit] Ratings

The first season premiered strong at 11.78 million viewers, and actually grew upon that audience through its first season. In the 18–49 demographic, the show constantly found itself in the top 5. For its average season rating, the show landed itself as No. 20 with total viewers at nearly 12 million viewers. In the 18–49 rankings, the show was No. 4 at a 5.4 ranking.

The second season premiered on Super Bowl Sunday, February 5, 2012, and has since managed to keep a 6.0 in the adults 18–49 demographic and 17 million viewers. Partnering The Voice with Smash (NBC's musical drama) helped NBC win the Monday night ratings. However, by Monday, April 9, the ratings had fallen to a 4.0 rating in the adult 18–49 demographic.

The third season premiered on Monday, September 10, 2012 to 12.28 million viewers and a 4.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and has since then grown to a season high 4.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic on October 8, October 15 and October 29, 2012 and 4.9 rating in the finale.[19] The Voice, along with NBC's new drama, Revolution has once again led NBC to win every Monday night of the season so far, just like it did last season. On Tuesdays, comedies Go On and The New Normal have been successful thanks to The Voice, leading NBC to be the only network of the Big 5 to grow in ratings from last season.
