If I have a bag of stones and a list of morally repulsive public figures, Jodie doesn't even come close to meriting the waste of a good rock. Foster has stood out in this crowd for quite some time. The timing of this "coming out" is puzzling. As she's retiring, she could easily have ignored the common knowledge and ridden off into the sunset. Yet instead by announcing it at a time when she leaves the spotlight, she makes the announcement seem something to be ashamed of and hidden. Now she can't be touched by the comments as she won't be in front of the camera. By comparison, Victor Gerber's simple acknowledgement went asked is much more 2013 than Foster, who seems stuck in the 1970s form of "coming out."

As for her relationship with Mel Gibson, it's not a paint-by-numbers anything. This is a clear case of a bigot with a drinking problem who verbally abuses those who get in his way. His treatment of women, Jews, blacks, hispanics, and the entire country of England is appalling and by supporting Gibson without comment, she is tacitly approving of his behavior. It's rather sad. I found her matter-of-fact speech very moving and honest. It was a Lifetime Achievement Award for heaven's sake, she reflected on her life honestly and thanked the people important to her. Being who she is, the content was more than refreshing, and I felt we got a good glimpse into her life, not that it's any of our business.
I would like to add the same is true of Anne Hathaway. She also stated her mind (Blurg!) and her tribute to Sally Field as an inspirational figure because she came up in a similar way (Flying Nun/Princess Diaries being pigeonholes one does not get free of easily in that world) was moving and honest, yes, in a traditional way. That happens still. Dumping on Ms. Hathaway does not add to the conversation. winsmith: Well said Mr. Goltz! Thanks so much, Dr. Goltz. I've long been troubled by what you call the "coming-out ritual" which, exactly as you say, audiences have been TRAINED to expect. What I loved was the way her parody of coming out forced the audience to confront those expectations -- and the intransigence of their demand that they be followed perfectly. She spoke about people, people whom she loves outside the expected framework of a current sexual relationship, and audiences had to face the fact that something SO personal as her proclamation of an enduring, lifelong love for CB was still NOT ENOUGH for them. Thank you especially for these sentences: "Foster didn't give that. In fact, she refused it, once again, denying the audience at home the opportunity to experience this coming out ritual. By refusing this expectation, she exposed how people don't know how to respond in the absence of predictable scripts." Joanna_Eleftheriou: Thank God for some sensible comments here! Without the truly brave who fought and continue to fight for our dignity and rights and 'paint themselves with rainbows' we wouldn't have the ability to live gay any way we please. I applaud Jody for coming out publicly and joining the national conversation—yet the prize is not won. We don't have full Marriage Equality and national employment non-discrimination laws. Until we do, our dignity can still be trampled upon and our rights infringed by lack of law.

To anyone reading, come out now. If you are authentically you early in life, you will be surrounded by the relationships with friends and family that you build over your years as an out and open person. Being out is being in a place free from fear. It is a place of power. No one can out you, no one can terrorize you because you are in the closet. You let go of the fear of the closet and become transformed by the power of living in truth. cmcdonald214: It is the people who have lived out, loud and http://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/cmcdonald214/jodie-foster-comes-out-speech_b_2478567_222020860.html History  | Permalink  | Share it This comment has been down-ranked into oblivion. Foster and her choices, the writer has indulged in that most common of errors in writing today- the article wasn't edited before being published, leaving the wording confusing and sometimes just plain wrong.
I agree with the sentiment that says no one needs to conform to anyone else's idea of propriety when it concerns "coming out", which I don't think is precisely what Ms. Foster did. Privacy is still a prized commodity, and just because someone is a well-known public figure, that doesn't mean the public has a "right" to know the tiniest detail of their lives. If Ms. Foster is a lesbian, and wishes the public to know it, fine, but why must people twist words and make unwarranted suppositions? She is a gifted, talented actress, but she also has a right to have some modicum of privacy. Actors and actresses do NOT "belong" to the public, although that seems to be the common belief. They are entitled to whatever kind of life they desire, just as anyone else is. Why does everyone suddenly become a member of the paparazzi whenever such a person speaks publicly? Haven't we learned, from the death of Princess Diana, what such behavior can cause? I think that Ms. Foster is chuckling to herself every time a new "expose" surfaces regarding what her speech meant. It is none of our business. Stop analyzing it, Let it be what it was- a heartfelt "thank you". leathrpaws: While it is mostly complimentary to ms. Jodie Foster poses with the Cecile B. DeMille Award for outstanding contribution to entertainment following an elongated acceptance speech.

And the award for most shockingly honest and emotional acceptance speech goes to… Jodi Foster.

The 50-year-old actress, who has long kept her private life as guarded as anyone in Hollywood, came as close as she ever has to outing herself publicly as a lesbian as she accepted the Cecille B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at Sunday night’s Golden Globes.   PHOTOS: STARS WHO'VE COME OUT   “I guess I have a sudden urge to say something that I've never been able to air in public that I'm a little nervous about,” Foster said, “But maybe not as nervous as my publicist.

BEHIND THE VELVET ROPE: INSIDE THE GOLDEN GLOBE AFTER PARTIES

Orion Pictures Jodie Foster took home an Acedemy Award for Best Actress in her role opposite Anthony Hopkins in the 1991 classic 'Silence of The Lambs.'   "So I'm just going to put it out there, loud and proud. I'm going to need your support on this. I am… single," she said, eliciting much laughter and applause.   But she quickly shifted gears into a more serious tone – one that left acting peers like Anne Hathaway with tears streaming down their cheeks.  Twitter Twitter exploded with comments, including Rosie O'Donnell, Perez Hilton and Nina Garcia, following Jodi Foster's speech -- and her name was trending well into the morning hours. "I already did my coming out a thousand years ago, in the Stone Age," said Foster. "Those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to friends and family and co-workers then gradually to everyone that knew her, everyone she actually met. But now apparently I'm told that every celebrity is to honor the details of their private life with a press conference, a fragrance and a primetime reality show.   VIDEO: WATCH JODIE FOSTER'S SHOCKING GOLDEN GLOBES SPEECH   “If you had been a public figure from the time that you were a toddler … then maybe you too might value privacy above all else,” she said, a likely allusion to the paparazzi frenzy that plagues younger actors like Kristen Stewart, her former co-star and friend.   “I have given everything up there from the time I was three years old, that's reality show enough, do you think?”   Getty Images Jodie Foster shared the screen with the legendary Robert De Niro in one of Martin Scorsese's signtaure flick 'Taxi Driver.'    Foster then gave a shout-out to her long-time friend Mel Gibson – an actor whose been shunned by almost everyone else in Hollywood after audio of his most recent racially tinged rant had been circulated publically.    And then she thanked her two sons, Charles and Christopher Foster, making reference to their “modern family” that they shared with the woman long rumored to be her partner.   "There's no way I could ever stand here without acknowledging one of the deepest loves of my life,” said Foster. “My heroic co-parent, my ex-partner in love but righteous soul sister in life, my confessor, ski buddy, consiglieri, most beloved BFF of 20 years, Cydney Bernard."   David Livingston/Getty Images Actress Jodie Foster (R) and son Christopher "Kit" Foster attend the Go-Go's concert at the Greek Theatre on August 17, 2011 in Los Angeles, California.    Foster's speech drew reave reviews from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Monday morning.   "When one of the most critically-praised actresses speaks about her identity and relationships on one of the largest stages in the world, it shows just how much the tide has turned," GLAAD President Herndon Graddick said in a statement. "Given Jodie Foster's lifetime of achievements, this is a significant moment for LGBT visibility. As more and more high-profile LGBT people like Jodie speak openly, those who do not accept LGBT people will continue to fall behind the times."       Click for video Post a Comment » Comments See All Comments [Discussion Guidelines ]

Foster, it seems, was ragging about the media, paparazzi as well as making a pitch for her right to privacy. We all have a right to privacy . . . to a certain extent. Once any of us steps out into pubic, we waive our right to total privacy because, well, that's the difference between "public" and "private." Most celebrities who have a movie coming out relish the attention and publicity that published photographs bring. In fact we, as the general public, get tired of seeing these celebrities, such as Jodi Foster, over and over again, appearing on every talk show on TV just as their movie is about to be released. The point is that being a celebrity does not make them immune to being photographed in public. If celebrities don't want to be photographed by paparazzi, they should pressure media outlets not pay for and publish them. No, celebrities cannot afford to bite the hand that feeds them. Better to blame the paparazzi than the media for whom the celebrity depends on for exposure and publicity. Celebrities should have no more choice about being photographed in public than the general public has about seeing them over and over again on TV, on the web, on radio talk shows, etc. when they have a new movie to promote or want to be seen. Ms Foster is a educated woman who made an absolute choice to be awarded (she could have denied) and to come onto TV (viewed by millions) ... privacy --- no she wants all the perks of putting herself and family on the public radar and wants none of the consequences.

Fame has a price and she was under the radar .... if she never went to the Golden Globes and turned down the award ... then I would believe her request for privacy. ffffffrabbit: Jodie Foster "Privacy" includes naming all her personal friends from http://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/ffffffrabbit/jodie-foster-gay-golden-globes_n_2469439_222335391.html History  | Permalink  | Share it This comment has been down-ranked into oblivion. It's a new world folks, one I am happy to be a part of. Many older gay people think Foster had some kind of "responsibility" to come out while the younger generation (gay and straight) seems unmoved. Advocates praised Jodie Foster's coming out on the televised stage of the Golden Globe Awards last night, but some said she had done little over the years to set an example for others who are LGBT and struggling.

BEST MOMENTS: The 2013 Golden Globes

"It was cryptic and defensive and we started thinking it was a joke," said Diane Anderson-Minshall, executive editor of The Advocate. "She sounded a little passive-aggressive to a lot of LBGT activists. This woman who obviously has been afraid to come out in the public sphere has been out in her private life for decades."

"By our stand, you are not out until you are publicly out," she said. "Even though she danced around being a lesbian, at least it's finally done."

Some said her long-awaited coming out may have underscored the generation gap in the LGBT world.

Foster, who just turned 50, touched on her career, family and her sexuality while accepting the Cecille B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement.

"I guess I have a sudden urge to say something that I've never been able to air in public that I'm a little nervous about," she said. "But maybe not as nervous as my publicist…"

"So I'm just going to put it out there, loud and proud. I'm going to need your support on this," she said to rapt room, cameras showing some stars like Anne Hathaway weeping.

But some say her coming out was not so overt, that the actress's six and a half-minute speech was cryptic and meandering. They say it would have been more powerful had she been straight forward.

The Los Angeles Times called her speech "winding, emotional," prompting viewers to ask themselves: "Had Foster come out as gay? And had she announced her retirement?"

In the speech, Foster said: "Well, I may never be up on this stage again, on any stage for that matter. Change, you gotta love it. I will continue to tell stories, to move people by being moved, the greatest job in the world. It's just that from now on, I may be holding a different talking stick."

But later she told the Los Angeles Times that she isn't retiring. "I could never stop acting," she told the paper. "You'd have to drag me behind a team of horses...I'd like to be directing tomorrow. But, no, I'm actually more into [acting] than I've ever been."

Michael Musto, a culture columnist in the Village Voice, said: "I found her speech a weirdly defensive, self-rationalizing defense of the celebrity closet. I always find it upsetting when celebrities name sexuality as the diving line in the privacy issue. I don't think you have to be Honey Boo Boo -- to name an example she gave -- to be honest and open about something personal."

"I think Jodie should have just said, 'Yep, I'm gay,' rather than try to justify the fact that she was in the glass closet while claiming she already did come out (meaning to everyone she meets)," he wrote in an email to ABCNews.com. "A straightforward coming out would have been preferable to the route she took -- -and by the way, I think she should have done it many years ago. But parts of her speech were very moving and now she is out, so I think we should just throw her a party."

FULL COVERAGE: The 2013 Awards Season

Foster had come out as early as 2007 at a Hollywood Reporter breakfast, according to Buzzfeed's Kate Arthur, when the actress thanked "my beautiful Cydney," her then-girlfriend, Cydney Bernard. They have since broken up, as alluded to in last night's speech when Foster announced, "I am ... single."

Foster also called Bernard, "My heroic co-parent, my ex-partner in love."

After the awards ceremony, Foster told the LA Times, "The speech kind of speaks for itself."

Others cheered her on.

"When one of the most critically-praised actresses speaks about her identity and relationships on one of the largest stages in the world, it shows just how much the tide has turned," said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick. "Given Jodie Foster's lifetime of achievements, this is a significant moment for LGBT visibility. As more and more high-profile LGBT people like Jodie speak openly, those who do not accept LGBT people will continue to fall behind the times."

Filmmakers Jennifer Brooke and Beatrice Alda, daughter of actor Alan Alda, said in a statement to ABCNews.com: "We wholeheartedly support and applaud anyone who comes out, whether they are struggling teens, evolving adults, or major celebrities."

Their 2008 film, "Out Late," looked at other women who had come out after 50.

"In Foster's case, the packaging of her coming out in an intellectually complex and multi-layered speech, just as the timing of it, is of course part of her freedom of both expression and privacy," they said. "It is all about progress -- meaning positive forward motion — and last night Foster certainly provided that."

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. On a night of surprises and laughs, the 70th annual Golden Globe Awards may be most memorable for a moving speech by actress Jodie Foster, who spoke emotionally of love, loyalty and career.

Accepting the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award, Foster spoke obliquely about her relationship with Cydney Bernard, her former partner of 20 years with whom she has two sons. Foster called her "my heroic co-parent, my ex-partner in love but righteous soul sister in life, my confessor, ski buddy, consiglieri, [and] most beloved BFF of 20 years.

"I am so proud of our modern family," she added, as her two boys in the audience smiled.

The 50-year-old Academy Award-winner (for "The Silence of the Lambs" and "The Accused") has always been protective of her private life, and though she has not hidden her relationship with Bernard or her sexual orientation, she has not allowed it to be fodder for interviews.

Backstage, Foster explained why she had opened up: "The speech kind of speaks for itself. ... It's a big moment. I wanted to say what's most in my heart."

Foster had coyly opened up her remarks with, "I'm just going to put it out there, loud and proud. I am, uh, . . . single."

The audience laughter was followed with her alluding to her coming out: "I already did my coming out a thousand years ago, in the Stone Age," she said. "Those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family and co-workers and then gradually to everyone that knew her, everyone she actually met. But now apparently I'm told that every celebrity is expected to honor the details of their private life with a press conference, a fragrance, and a primetime reality show.

"You guys might be surprised but I am not Honey Boo Boo child. No, I'm sorry. That's just not me. It never was and it never will be. But please don't cry, because my reality show would so boring."

She added, "If you had been a public figure from the time that you were a toddler, if you had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds, then maybe then you, too, might value privacy above all else. Privacy.

"I have given everything up there from the time that I was three years old -- that's reality show enough, don't you think?

"There are a few secrets to keeping your psyche intact over such a long career. The first, love people and stay beside them." She gave a shout-out to her acting agent of 38 years.

Foster also paid tribute to her 84-year-old mother, who suffers from dementia. "Mom, I know you are inside those blue eyes somewhere," she said, "and that there are so many things that you won't understand tonight, but this is the only important one to take in: I love you, I love you, I love you. And I hope that if I say this three times, it will magically and perfectly enter into your soul, fill you with grace and the joy of knowing that you did good in this life, you're a great mom. Please take that with you when you're finally okay to go."

"This feels like the end of one era and the beginning of something else," she said in conclusion. Though Foster did not mention retirement, she alluded to a change in her career in which she "may be holding a different talking stick.

"Maybe it won't be as sparkly, maybe it won't open on 3,000 screens, maybe it will be so quiet and delicate that only dogs can hear it whistle," Foster said, "But it will be my writing on the wall. 'Jodie Foster was here.' I still am. And I want to be seen, to be understood deeply, and to be not so very lonely."

Backstage, Foster reaffirmed that her career announcement did not mean retirement. "Oh no, I could never stop acting. You would have to drag me behind a team of horses."

Lena Dunham, who won the Best Actress in a TV Comedy Award for her HBO series "Girls," said, "I think that one of the most wonderful things about the speech that Miss Foster just gave was that it was really a complex, interesting assessment of what it's like to have a creative career over a long period of time. She wasn't trying to hand you one moral."

Jessica Chastain (who won the Golden Globe for Best Actress/Drama Award for the film 'Zero Dark Thirty"), told the Los Angeles Times, "I can tell you what I took from the speech, as an actress I struggle with the idea of privacy. ...The actors who I respect are the ones who try hard to keep their privacy, like Jodie Foster -- I think when an actor is able to do that the audience is better able to accept them in different roles."

Jane Fonda praised Foster's speech, calling it "mysterious" and "profound." "It was my favorite part of the evening," she told The Associated Press.

Mel Gibson, who was directed by Foster in the 2011 film "The Beaver," said his friend's appearance was typical of her: "Priceless and classy."

Bill Murray said the speech focused on love but also seemed to indicate a change ahead for Foster. "I back Jodie wherever she's going with this," he said.

And Amy Poehler, who co-hosted the Golden Globes with longtime friend and fellow comedian Tina Fey, cracked as she was signing off for the night: "We're going home with Jodie Foster!"

But not all Twitter traffic was complimentary. Writer Bret Easton Ellis tweeted that Foster appeared drunk, "killed off her mother," and distilled her speech to " 'I want all of the good stuff and none of the bad stuff!' What is she? A three year-old lesbian?"

The Hollywood hypocrisy is complete: Jodie Foster accepts her Lifetime Achievement award at The GG's and then demands PUBLIC PRIVACY...

Her acting capability is what should be honored (she is an amazing actress!) not who she prefers to sleep with. I think her speech was dignified and appropriate for the occasion. As most intelligent people are, she doesn't like the popular trend in putting on anyone that can and will disgust the American public. The more disgusting, it seems, the better the public seems to like it, sad. She is a proud, smart and somewhat regal entertainer to be respected and have her WORK honored, period! reply bonjupatten replies: linkicon reporticon emailicon If being gay had nothing to do with the award why did she "try" to mention it? Her acting is NOT in question here. If she wants privacy she went into the wrong field. BTW, she cheated on her 15 year relationship and that is why she is lonely and single now. Just saying. She had absolutely nothing to lose by coming out and she still couldn't do it. Sometimes actors need scripts. linkicon reporticon emailicon bones1944 says: Wasn't this news about 20 years ago. Why is it news now? reply TimeToEvolve replies: linkicon reporticon emailicon I think it is news because of the current push for marriage equality. It is the same as us trying to understand that minorities in our country have had to and still deal with mindless racist twits all day long. linkicon reporticon emailicon SickofHollywood says: I used to admire Ms. Foster but not so sure anymore. She has been on the inside of Hollywood for 47 years, and has made a lot of connections with rich, powerful people. Those rich, powerful people are the ones that produce and attend the Golden Globes. The speeches are for the recipients to express their gratitude to the establishment that made them rich and famous. If this rich, talented, intelligent lesbian chose to make a rambling, sometimes funny, sometimes embarrassing speech, that's her decision. Get over it, the rest of the world will. reply linkicon reporticon emailicon TJphoto says: A1.....1st Class......Four Stars. It was a stand up moment. You go Girl reply linkicon reporticon emailicon marychgo says: I think Atrius at Eschaton has it right: we need to realize there are TWO kinds of "celebrities."
Some "celebrities" (actors, athletes, even some politicians) have to spend time with the press to promote their latest efforts, but do their best to live normal lives, outside the spotlight, when they're not in the middle of a promotion campaign. Other "celebrities" don't seem to be happy if they're NOT in the spotlight; if they're not promoting a current project, they're embroiled in a feud or acting out at a club or otherwise keeping the paparazzi busy.
All I expect from Category 1 "celebrities" is a skillful, professional performance; they absolutely have a right to privacy about their personal lives. As for Category 2 "celebrities," they seem to have willingly given up any right to privacy; sadly, many of them don't seem to have a heckuva lot to offer in terms of skillful, professional performance.... reply linkicon reporticon emailicon lawsonbd says: Kudos to the media for ignoring Foster's "speech" as the earth-shattering announcement she presumably intended it to be. Twenty or maybe 10 years ago it would have been the lead piece on evening news but today nobody gives a ****. Moreover, twenty of maybe 10 years ago this self-serving bit of trivia
would have been regarded as courageous for taking a stand. Now I question Ms Foster's motives and her timing. Enough already with these privacy-phobic ENTERTAINERS! Did they not know they were entering a "public" profession when they chose acting as a career? I would have had more respect for her had she remained silent (most of us had our suspicions all along), which would have lent more credibility to her "privacy" position.
But last night she simply came across as tacky, self-indulgent and pretentious. A modified saying comes to mind: I used to think you were "fake" until you "spoke" ("made a speech") and removed all doubt! reply blankandorange replies: linkicon reporticon emailicon Exactly what I thought, why even bring it up. In fact, I haven't thought about her for quite a long time being an actress. Never really seen much acting on her part right now. As for her privacy point, her rambling speech was a bit too long (6 min.) and gave as too much info which we already knew and I frankly don't care. As a entertainer, did she expect less, kind of comes with it. She jabbed at the celebrities with reality shows and fragrance promotions but that's their choice and if they want to do it, don't blame the media for it. Kudos to her for being Mel Gibson's friend, but why give him as your example and not someone else, frankly he needs them or he would have been a has been. The only thing I found a little sincere was her shout out to her 2 boys and her message to her Mom. Seriously, I don't understand her loneliness she spoke of, but isn't that what she wanted....hope she finds what she's obviously missing. Jodie Foster (born Alicia Christian Foster; November 19, 1962) is an American actress, film director, and producer.

Foster began acting in commercials at the age of three, and had her first significant role at the age of 13 in the 1976 film Taxi Driver as the preteen prostitute Iris, for which she received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. The following year, she starred in the cult film The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1989, for playing a rape victim in The Accused. In 1991, she starred in The Silence of the Lambs as Clarice Starling, a gifted FBI trainee, assisting in a hunt for a serial killer. Foster's performance in the film received international acclaim and her second Academy Award for Best Actress. She received her fourth Academy Award nomination for playing a hermit in Nell (1994). She has also starred in other films, including Bugsy Malone (1976), Freaky Friday (1976), Candleshoe (1977), Maverick (1994), Contact (1997), Panic Room (2002), Flightplan (2005), Inside Man (2006), The Brave One (2007), Nim's Island (2008), and Carnage (2011), for which she received a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.

Foster's films have spanned a wide variety of genres, from family films to horror. In addition to her two Academy Awards, she has won three BAFTA Awards for two films, two Golden Globe Awards, including the Cecil B DeMille Award,[2] a Screen Actors Guild Award, and has received two Emmy Award nominations.

Foster was born November 19, 1962 in Los Angeles, California. She is the youngest of four children born to Evelyn Ella "Brandy" (née Almond) and Lucius Fisher Foster II. Her father, a decorated U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel turned real estate broker, came from a wealthy background and left his wife before Foster was born.[3] Foster has two older sisters, Lucinda "Cindy" Foster (b. 1954) and Constance "Connie" Foster (b. 1955), and an older brother, Lucius Fisher "Buddy" Foster (b. 1957), who was also a child actor.[4][5] Evelyn supported her children by working as a film producer.[6]

Foster attended a French-language prep school, the Lycée Français de Los Angeles, and graduated in 1980. She frequently stayed and worked in France as a teenager, and speaks the language fluently. She then attended Yale University, earning a bachelor's degree in literature in 1985. She was scheduled to graduate in 1984, but the shooting of then-President Ronald Reagan by John Hinckley, Jr., in which Hinckley's fascination with Foster created unwanted adverse publicity for her,[7] caused her to take a semester's leave of absence from Yale.[8][9] She received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from the university in 1997.[10]

Due to her French fluency, Foster has dubbed herself in French-language versions of most of her films.[11][12] In 2004, she took a minor role in the French WWI film, A Very Long Engagement. She also understands German[13][14] and Spanish and can converse in Italian.[15][16]

Career Child star Jodie Foster with Christopher Connelly in TV's Paper Moon, 1974.

Foster made nearly 50 film and television appearances before she attended college. She began her career at age three as a Coppertone girl in a television commercial[17] and debuted as a television actress in a 1968 episode of Mayberry R.F.D.[18] She was managed by her mother.[19] In 1969, she appeared in an episode of Gunsmoke, where she was credited as "Jody Foster". She is also credited as "Jodi Foster" for her 1970 Daniel Boone role and credited as "Jodie Foster" for her 1970 Adam-12 role. Although not a regular on The Courtship of Eddie's Father, she appeared from time to time as Eddie's friend Joey Kelly.[20] She made her film debut in the 1970 TV movie Menace on the Mountain and was featured as Tallulah in Bugsy Malone in 1976. As a child, Foster made a number of Disney movies, including One Little Indian (1973), and Napoleon and Samantha (1972), in which she was mauled by a circus lion.[21] Foster continued to star in Disney films into her early teens. On television, she appeared in an episode of The Partridge Family titled "The Eleven-Year Itch", co-starred with Christopher Connelly in the 1974 TV series Paper Moon and alongside Martin Sheen in the 1976 cult film The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane. As a teenager, Foster made several appearances on the French pop music circuit as a singer. Commenting on her years as a child actress, which she describes as an "actor's career", Foster has said that "it was very clear to me at a young age that I had to fight for my life and that if I didn't, my life would get gobbled up and taken away from me."[22] She hosted Saturday Night Live at age 14,[23] making her the youngest person to host at that time until Drew Barrymore hosted at the age of seven.[24] She also said,

I think all of us when we look back on our childhood, we always think of it as somebody else. It's just a completely different place. But I was lucky to be around in the '70s and to really be making movies in the '70s with some great filmmakers – the most exciting time, for me, in American Cinema. I learned a lot from some very interesting artists – and I learned a lot about the business at a young age, because, for whatever reason, I was paying attention; so it was kind of invaluable in my career.[25]

Foster made her debut (and only official) musical recordings in France in 1977: two seven-inch singles, "Je T'attends Depuis la Nuit des Temps" b/w "La Vie C'est Chouette"[26] and "When I Looked at Your Face" backed with "La Vie C'est Chouette". The A-side of the former is sung in French, the A-side of the latter in English. The B-side of both is mostly spoken word and is performed in both French and English. These three recordings were included on the soundtrack to Foster's 1977 French film Moi, fleur bleue.

Foster starred in three films in 1976: Taxi Driver, Bugsy Malone, and Freaky Friday. She was nominated for the Academy Award For Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Taxi Driver. She won two British Academy Film Awards in 1977: the BAFTA Award for Best Newcomer and the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performances in Bugsy Malone opposite Scott Baio and Taxi Driver opposite Robert De Niro. She received a nomination for Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her performance in Freaky Friday. As a teenager, she also starred in the Disney adventure Candleshoe (1977) and the coming-of-age drama Foxes (1980).

Adult career At the 61st Academy Awards Governor's Ball, March 29, 1989.

Foster made the transition to more mature roles as an adult, but it was not without initial difficulty, as several of the films in her early adult career were financially unsuccessful. These included The Hotel New Hampshire,[27] Five Corners,[28] and Stealing Home.[29] She had to audition for her role in The Accused. She won the part and the first of her two Golden Globes and Academy Awards and a nomination for a BAFTA Award as Best Actress for her role as a rape survivor. She starred as FBI trainee Clarice Starling in the 1991 thriller The Silence of the Lambs, for which she won her second Academy Award and Golden Globe, and won her first BAFTA Award for Best Actress. This is the film for which Foster has won the most awards. This "sleeper" film marked a breakthrough in her career, grossing nearly $273 million in theaters[30] and becoming her first blockbuster.[31]

Foster made her directorial debut in 1991, with Little Man Tate, a critically acclaimed[32] drama about a child prodigy, in which she also co-starred as the child's mother. She also directed Home for the Holidays (1995), a black comedy starring Holly Hunter and Robert Downey Jr.[25] In 1992, Foster founded a production company called Egg Pictures in Los Angeles. It primarily produced independent films for distribution by other companies until it was closed in 2001. Foster said that she did not have the ambition to produce "big mainstream popcorn" movies and, as a child, independent films had made her more interested in the movie business than mainstream ones.[25] She played Laurel Sommersby in Sommersby opposite Richard Gere, who would comment that "She's very much a close-up actress, because her thoughts are clear."[33]

Foster starred in two films in 1994, first in the hugely successful western spoof Maverick[34] and later in Nell, in which she starred as an isolated woman, raised speaking an invented language, who finds it difficult to be confronted with civilization for the first time. Her performance in Nell earned her nominations for her fourth Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and an MTV Movie Award, and won her a Screen Actors Guild Award and a People's Choice Award, among others. In 1996, Women in Film awarded her the Crystal Award for outstanding women who, through their endurance and the excellence of their work, have helped to expand the role of women within the entertainment industry.[35] In the same year, Foster was awarded with the Berlinale Camera award at the 46th Berlin International Film Festival.[36]

Foster at the 62nd Academy Awards ceremonies in 1990.

In 1997, she starred alongside Matthew McConaughey in the science-fiction movie Contact, based on the novel by scientist Carl Sagan. She portrayed a scientist searching for extraterrestrial life in the SETI project. She commented on the script that "I have to have some acute personal connection with the material. And that's pretty hard for me to find."[citation needed] Contact was her first sci-fi film, and her first experience with a bluescreen. She commented, "Blue walls, blue roof. It was just blue, blue, blue. And I was rotated on a lazy Susan with the camera moving on a computerized arm. It was really tough."[37]

The film was another commercial success[38] and earned Foster nominations for numerous awards, including a Golden Globe. In 1998, an asteroid, 17744 Jodiefoster, was named in her honor.[39] In 1999, she starred in Anna and the King, a remake of the 1946 film based on Margaret Landon's 1944 novel, which became an international commercial success.[40]

In 2002, Foster took over the lead role in the thriller Panic Room after Nicole Kidman dropped out due to a previous injury.[41] The film costarred Forest Whitaker, Jared Leto, Dwight Yoakam and Kristen Stewart and was directed by David Fincher. It grossed over $30 million in its opening weekend in the United States, Foster's biggest box office opening success of her career so far.[25] She then performed in the French-language film Un long dimanche de fiançailles (A Very Long Engagement) (2004), speaking French fluently throughout. She returned to English-language films with the 2005 thriller Flightplan, which opened once again in the top position at the U.S. box office and was a worldwide hit.[42] She portrayed a woman whose daughter disappears on an airplane that her character, an engineer, helped to design.[43]

In 2006, Foster co-starred in Inside Man, a thriller directed by Spike Lee and starring Denzel Washington and Clive Owen, which again opened at the top of the U.S. box office and became another international hit.[44] In 2007, she starred in The Brave One directed by Neil Jordan and co-starring Terrence Howard, another urban thriller that opened at No.1 at the U.S. box office.[45] Her performance in the film earned her a sixth Golden Globe for Best Actress nomination and another People's Choice nomination, for Favorite Female Action Star. Commenting on her latest roles, she has said she enjoys appearing in mainstream genre films that have a "real heart to them."[46]

In 2008, Foster starred in Nim's Island alongside Gerard Butler and Abigail Breslin, portraying a reclusive writer who is contacted by a young girl after her father goes missing at sea. The film was the first comedy that Foster has starred in since Maverick in 1994, and was also a commercial success.[47]

Foster was set to direct, as well as reunite with actor Robert De Niro, for the film Sugarland; however, the film was shelved indefinitely in 2007. Foster is developing a biographical film of Leni Riefenstahl. She directed and starred opposite her Maverick co-star Mel Gibson in a black comedy titled The Beaver, which came out in May 2011.[48]

Foster provided her voice for Maggie in a tetralogy episode of The Simpsons titled "Four Great Women and a Manicure."[49]

In March 2011, Foster said she planned to direct a family-oriented science-fiction thriller. At that point, she said, the project remained in the scripting stage.[50]

Target of fan obsession

John Hinckley, Jr., became obsessed with Foster after watching Taxi Driver a number of times,[51][52] and stalked her while she attended Yale, sending her love letters to her campus mail box and even talking to her on the phone. On March 30, 1981, he attempted to assassinate U.S. President Ronald Reagan (shooting and wounding Reagan and three others) and claimed his motive was to impress Foster, then a Yale freshman. The media stormed the Yale campus in April "like a cavalry invasion," and followed Foster relentlessly.[53][54]

The incident caused Foster intense discomfort and reporters have been warned in advance not to bring up the subject in front of her; she has been known to walk out of interviews at the mention of Hinckley's name.[55] In 1991, Foster canceled an interview with NBC's Today Show when she discovered Hinckley would be mentioned in the introduction.[55] Foster's only public reactions to this were a press conference afterwards and an article titled "Why Me?" that she wrote for Esquire in December 1982. In that article she wrote that returning to work on the film Svengali with Peter O'Toole "made me fall in love with acting again"[56] after the assassination attempt had shaken her confidence. In 1999, she discussed the experience with Charlie Rose of 60 Minutes II.[57]

Another man, Edward Richardson, followed Foster around Yale and planned to shoot her, but decided against it because she "was too pretty."[55]

Personal life

Foster has two sons: Charles "Charlie" Foster (b. July 20, 1998) and Christopher "Kit" Foster (b. September 29, 2001).[1][58]

Foster is an atheist.[59][60][61] Foster has stated she has "great respect for all religions" and spends "a lot of time studying divine texts, whether it's Eastern religion or Western religion."[33][62] She and her children celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah.[63]

Foster broke up with her long-time girlfriend, Cydney Bernard, in 2008. Foster and Cydney had been dating since 1993.[64][65]

In her acceptance remarks upon receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards, she commented about her sexual orientation: "I already did my coming out about 1,000 years ago back in the stone age, those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family and co-workers, and then gradually and proudly to everyone who knew her, to everyone she actually met." She thanked her former partner of 20 years, production manager Cydney Bernard, calling her "my heroic co-parent, my ex-partner in love but righteous soul sister in life".[66][67][68]
