I couldn't speak at the end of this movie, I was so choked up with emotion, so overwhelmed by this incredible experience. I'm not sure what it was about the film, certainly had something to do with Hushpuppy, with the story, with the location...but this movie moved me and has stayed with me and somehow changed me a bit. i know that sounds hokey, but it did.Just an amazing story, simple and beautiful and hard and painful at times. 'I absolutely loved it and am thankful to everyone involved for creating this beauty and sharing it with the world.something truly, truly special.unlike anything i've ever seen before.thank you. this is the power of a great story.

No Pointless rubbish...LITERALLY! by

This is a critic's movie. If you regularly agree with the critics and like 'way out there, but not much there' movies, then this pointless indulgence into filth, alcoholism, and fantasy will delight you and leave you satiated for some time. The little girl was very good, and was the only reason I found to stay till the end.

Must Go! This is a great movie that stays with you! by nnorton123

Hushpuppy, the 6 year old star of this film, is just as her name describes - tough on the outside and tender and sweet on the inside. The relationship between father and daughter is the focus of this film. He seems as uncaring and harsh as their environment, but it becomes clear that he is preparing her for harsh reality even as they live in a harsh reality - bayou country at the edge of the world - "the bathtub", surrounded by water and virtually cut off from civilization. My 12 and 14 y/o kids loved the film as well. You feel like you're stepping into another world that is strange and almost absurd, but you leave loving everyone in it.

SCOTT Directed by: Benh Zeitlin Rating: PG-13 (Adult Situations/Profanity/Sexual Situations/Children in Peril) Review Summary

"Beasts of the Southern Wild," a passionate and unruly explosion of Americana, directed by Benh Zeitlin, winks at skepticism, laughs at sober analysis and stares down criticism. Made on a shoestring by a resourceful New Orleans-based collective, it is animated by the same spirit of freedom it sets out to celebrate. If, as the Fourth of July approaches, you find yourself craving an antidote to anger and cynicism, a bracing reminder of the meaning of independence, and a helping of homegrown art to go with your hamburgers and watermelon, then this may be just what you need. -- A. O. Scott

As a relentless storm is approaching a southern Louisiana bayou community called the "Bathtub" (a community cut off from the rest of the world by a levee), five-year old Hushpuppy appears optimistic along with her unhealthy hot-tempered father, Wink. The children in school are being taught by Miss Bathsheba on how to survive and about the release of ruthless prehistoric creatures called "Aurochs" from the melting ice caps. At home, Hushpuppy gets into an argument with Wink when he refuses to let her in his house (they have separate homes). Hushpuppy sets her house on fire and a chase ensues between the two, and she ends up getting slapped by Wink.

Meanwhile, in the Arctic, the frozen Aurochs in an ice shelf start drifting into the ocean.

Many of the Bathtub residents start fleeing due to the threat of the oncoming storm. Hushpuppy and Wink start to barricade their home, where the father, in an effort to make his daughter feel better, scares off the storm by shooting at the clouds. The next day, the storm has devastated the Bathtub and the surviving residents sail off in their boat and look for other people. After seeing her starved, Wink teaches a hesitant Hushpuppy how to catch a fish with her bare hands. The Bathtub residents celebrate together after being reunited after the flood. Wink and the other residents chant at Hushpuppy to "Beast it!" (to tear open a crab with her hands rather than using a knife), which she eventually does. All of the trees and vegetation in the bayou, as well as many of the fish, begin to die because of the salt water brought in by the storm surge. Wink worries that his paradise will be destroyed if he cannot drain the water.

Wink, along with two friends, comes up with a plan to destroy the levee to stop the flooding. Wink sticks some dynamite inside a dead alligator gar’s mouth and hands the trip wire to his friend, who loses it. However, the plan is carried out when Hushpuppy pulls the trip wire and breaks the wall of the levee apart. The residents start retreating back to their homes.

As Wink’s health deteriorates, Hushpuppy tends to him with a medicinal herb, which infuriates him. They start fighting by throwing things at one another, but in the end, Wink lets Hushpuppy win in an arm wrestling match and tells her that she needs to be strong if he'd ever be gone. The evacuation team arrives and all the inhabitants of the Bathtub are forcibly evacuated to a shelter home. There, Doctor Maloney tells Wink that he’s going to die unless they start his operation, which Hushpuppy overhears, although Wink tells her to mind her own business. When Doctor Maloney and his staff let their guard down, the evacuees storm out and escape back to their homes.

Aware of her father’s condition, Hushpuppy leaves in search of her mother. She and her friends swim to a boat which takes them to a ship that appears to be a bar. Hushpuppy meets a waitress who may be her mother, though the woman doesn't recognize her. She wants to stay but the waitress tells her she can't take care of her.

Hushpuppy and her friends return home, where she confronts the Aurochs freed from the ice caps and recognizes the animals as friends. As the Aurochs leave, Hushpuppy enters her home and says her last goodbyes to the dying Wink, listening to his last heartbeat. She sets his funeral pyre ablaze, standing in solidarity along with the remaining residents of the Bathtub.

The fictional island of the film, "Isle de Charles Doucet" known to its residents as the Bathtub, was inspired by several isolated and independent fishing communities threatened by erosion, hurricanes and rising sea levels in Louisiana's Terrebonne Parish, most notably the rapidly eroding Isle de Jean Charles. It was filmed in Terrebonne Parish town Montegut.[5]

[edit] Production

The film was shot on 16mm film, and director Benh Zeitlin created the production with a small professional crew, and with dozens of local residents in and around Montegut, Louisiana. The film-makers call themselves "Court 13" and are the first credited at the end of the film.[6]

Unorthodoxically, Zeitlin never looked at the raw footage until after the shoot was finished.[7]

During the audition, Quvenzhané Wallis (who was five years old,[8][9] though the casting call had been for girls between six and nine years) impressed the filmmakers with her reading ability, as well as a tremendous scream and her ability to burp on command, both of which are utilized in the film.[10]

Dwight Henry, who plays Wink, was not looking for an acting job. As he explained in an interview with the San Diego Reader:

"Before I was cast in the part I owned a bakery called Henry's Bakery and Deli right across the street from the casting agency where Court 13 had their studio. They used to come over and have lunch or breakfast in the morning. After a few months we kinda' developed a relationship. They used to put these fliers in the bakery with a phone number to call if you were interested in appearing in one of their movies."[11]

During a slow hour, he read for the part, and was chosen. However, at the time, Henry was in the middle of moving to a larger building (which would become the Buttermilk Drop Bakery and Café, in the Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans[12][13]), and the film-makers had trouble finding him. He explained that he could not leave a new business, but they were determined to have him. Henry concluded, "I was in Hurricane Katrina in neck-high water. I have an inside understanding for what this movie is about. I brought a passion to the part that an outside actor who had never seen a storm or been in a flood or faced losing everything couldn't have. … I was two-years-old when Hurricane Betsy hit New Orleans and my parents had to put me on the roof of the house. An outsider couldn't have brought the passion to the role that I did."[11]

[edit] Reception

The film has received largely positive critical reviews. According to Metacritic, which assigns aggregate scores from the amount of positive or negative critical reviews of films, Beasts of the Southern Wild has a 86/100 based on 41 critic reviews, indicating "universal acclaim".[14] Similarly, Rotten Tomatoes reports that the film has received a "Fresh" rating of 86% from 141 reviews (122 positive, 19 negative), with the consensus: "Beasts of the Southern Wild is a fantastical, emotionally powerful journey and a strong case of filmmaking that values imagination over money."[15]

The film was designated a 2012 "Critics' Pick" by the reviewers of The New York Times. Author and critic A. O. Scott, writing for The New York Times, calls Beasts a "blast of sheer, improbable joy, a boisterous, thrilling action movie with a protagonist who can hold her own... Hushpuppy, the 6-year-old heroine of 'Beasts of the Southern Wild,' has a smile to charm fish out of the water and a scowl so fierce it can stop monsters in their tracks. The movie, a passionate and unruly explosion of Americana, directed by Benh Zeitlin, winks at skepticism, laughs at sober analysis and stares down criticism."[16] Scott subsequently named Beasts of the Southern Wild the third best film of 2012.[17] Roger Ebert called the film a "remarkable creation... Sometimes miraculous films come into being, made by people you've never heard of, starring unknown faces, blindsiding you with creative genius. "Beasts of the Southern Wild" is one of the year's best films."[18]

Conversely, critic Cole Smithey named the film "one of the worst films to come out of 2012", awarding it 0 stars out of 5 and calling the film "infuriating, insulting, and bathed in patronizing condescension".[19] Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune said that Beasts was "the most divisive film of 2012", opining that "The filmmaker comes from a perspective of great empathy and considerable skill. But he's a pile driver as a dramatist. The film's screw-tightening methods are so overbearing, the story, the characters, the little girl's plight have to struggle to breathe or develop anything like an inner life."[20]

In an interview with People magazine, President Barack Obama described the film as "spectacular".[21]

The film's acclaim resulted in its Centerpiece screening at the 2012 Traverse City Film Festival.[22] Sight & Sound film magazine listed the film at #5 on its list of best films of 2012.[23]

[edit] Accolades

The film won the Caméra d'Or award at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival[24] after competing in the Un Certain Regard section.[25][26] It also won the Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, where it premiered,[27] and the Grand Jury Prize at the Deauville American Film Festival. The film went on to earn the Los Angeles Film Festival's Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature and the Seattle International Film Festival's Golden Space Needle Award for Best Director.[28] In October, it was announced that the film had won the Sutherland Trophy for Most Innovative Debut.[29] On January 10, 2013, the film was nominated for four Oscars, in the categories of Best Picture, Best Director (Benh Zeitlin), Lead Actress (Quvenzhané Wallis), and Adapted Screenplay (Lucy Alibar & Benh Zeitlin).[30][31]
