from this Author Much like America itself, the Chevrolet Corvette, the country's longest-running sports car, faced hard times in recent years.

A new era began Sunday night.

Inside a ramshackle industrial facility in northern Detroit, Chevrolet unveiled the 2014 Corvette C7, the model's first overhaul in nine years. It contains a next-generation V8 engine, a small-block LT1 that combines several advanced technologies into one package and takes drivers from 0 to 60 in less than four seconds.

But for Corvette, this isn't about statistics. "It's more than just a sports car," said GM design chief Ed Welburn. "It's an emotion. It's a passion. It is a vehicle that is larger than life."

For those reasons, it was perhaps the perfect vehicle to headline the first night of the North American International Auto Show. After years of economic doldrums brought on by the Great Recession, the auto industry needed a larger-than-life icon to help celebrate more than 15 million units sold in 2012.

Hundreds of sports-car enthusiasts hooted and hollered Sunday night as Chevrolet pulled curtains back and revealed the C7 inside the Russell Industrial Center, which felt more like a nightclub than a factory. They lingered around the bright-red specimen displayed for more than an hour after the reveal.

Most of the hard-core already knew some specifics about the model, like it's 450 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque.

Chevrolet added a twist, announcing the C7 will carry the Stingray name, a nod to the Corvette's early heritage throughout the 1960s.

"It matches the concept they had a couple of years ago, and they really hit the nail on the head," said John Dunlap, a 27-year-old Corvette owner and enthusiast who scored a ticket to Sunday's unveiling through the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky.

He drove his 2002 C5 from Minerva, Ohio to Detroit for the unveiling. Years ago, he was tempted to upgrade to the C6, but was instead glad he waited for the oft-delayed C7 model.

"They needed to make it sexier and relate it to its heritage," Dunlap said. "And the interior is going to blow our minds. Hopefully, that's really up there, the quality of the materials. I'm a touchy-feeling kind of guy, and the interior, before, was something that everyone knocked on."

Critics had panned the no-frills interior on the C6 model. But that was the least of Corvette's problems in recent years. There were few brands that symbolized the auto industry's crisis better.

As General Motors teetered on the brink of bankruptcy, the sports-car market was ravaged by the economy, losing approximately 41 percent of its sales from its pre-recession high. Sales of the Corvette, which debuted in 1953, slumped to their lowest numbers in nearly a half-century, falling to 13,164 in 2011.

Worse yet perhaps, the Corvette's more muscular sibling, the Chevy Camaro, gained a ton of attention after a mid-decade redesign that drove sales as high as 88,248 in 2011. But even as General Motors discarded sacred brands and models in the midst of its government-backed rescue, the Corvette endured.

"The soul of our company is indeed in Corvette," Mark Reuss, GM's chairman of North America, said Sunday. "Since 1953, through good times and bad for this company, there was always the Corvette, demonstrating what it means to win."

If there are nods to the Corvette's heritage in the new design, there are also subtle nods to the present competition. Gone are the car's trademark rounded tail lights, replaced with more boxy lights that resemble those found on the Camaro. That's not an update that sits well with many long-time Corvette owners.

"Many individuals are concerned about the rear square lights," said Tommy DeLuca, who owns a 2005 Corvette. "My concern would be how to differentiate the tail lights from other GM cars. The tail lights should be different so that anyone looking at the car will know it is a Corvette."

The C7 is one of 13 new Chevrolet products that will hit U.S. show rooms this year. Like many of the others, it arrives lighter than past models. Engineers said Sunday they had trimmed 90 pounds from the car, and used carbon fiber on even the base trim level.

Pricing was not announced Sunday night, but it is expected the base model of the C7 will cost more than the $49,600 of the base C6 predecessor. Fuel economy is expected to reach 18 miles per gallon in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

Combine the overhauled interior with the substantial exterior changes with the structural differences and drop in weight, and it's a dramatically different car.

"It's a bigger departure from the C6 to the C7 than I think it was from the C5 to the C6," Dunlap said. "It has a more exotic look, a more sexy look. They're trying to get a lot of young people involved, and I think this is the car to do it."

Hmmm. Back on point, the C7 is not a flowing, elegant, smooth look. Yes, it has a lot of Camaro and some bad elements of Lamborghini in it. Doesn't work for me. Now, getting off point to address some of the odder issues raised here:- The young boomers in the 60s and 70s who bought new vettes either had the money (own or family) or went into heavy hock for a never again experience- As far as I know, the geniuses driving other than vettes have no better and usually worse accident records- Age/weight is not the reason for disliking the low seats in the vette. They are too low to drive the car at speed comfortably vs other sport cars. Been that way forever.- For those who want a car like a vette but whine about affording one ... buy a used vette, BMW, or Porsche ... or go back to school and get a better job ... or wait until you're older and now can toss some momey at a dream car (not a penis thing in the older sport car drivers ... usually, it is the time you can afford to buy such a car.- Finally, take a look at the concept vette with the removable split in the rear window. Wow, what could have been!-

ps: great looking exhaust !!!

Luv the side and back [ except for camaro tailights ] hate the front head on look ! Top panel a little strange ---inside looks cartoonish---but a vette is a vette and i luv corvettes !!

It’s finally official, folks. After months of rumors, speculation, leaks, and quick looks, Chevrolet finally unveiled the 2014 Corvette C7. As expected, this new generation features a completely redesigned exterior and interior, but the company still sticks with the overall slick design of the long nose and short tail that the Corvette has always been about.

Aesthetically speaking, Chevrolet made the biggest change to the Corvette since the last major leap the company took with the C5 back in 1997. Of course, it still looks like a classic Corvette, but Chevrolet made some big changes to this new model. The headlights and grille are completely new, and the taillights ditch the circular approach and go for more of a Camaro-like look.

There’s also a lot of vents, and not in the interior. There’s vents on the tail, vents on the side, and vents on the hood. There’s definitely no shortage of vents, and it gives the A/C unit on the inside a run for its money. The interior will be familiar to anyone who’s seen the inside of a Corvette, but it has the new digital instrument panel that we saw in the past.

Also, as we already knew, the 2014 Corvette features a new 450 horsepower 6.2-liter Gen V LT1 V8 motor, which features direct fuel injection, as well as cylinder deactivation to improve gas mileage to something a little more acceptable — we’re talking around 26 mpg or so on the highway, and it’ll go from 0-60mph in under four seconds. There’s also a seven-speed transmission connected to the motor, with the option of a six-speed automatic for those who want the car to do the work.

Corvette did not disclose pricing for the new 2014 C7, but we’re expecting a price tag of at least $50,000 here. Dealerships should be expecting the new car to arrive sometime in the third quarter of this year.

This year's Detroit Auto Show was the Golden Corral of car shows; a giant spread of Asian, European, and American offerings designed to offer something at least palatable to nearly everyone in attendance. And when we say everyone, we honestly and truly mean every single person on planet Earth.

From the rebirth of an American icon to executives speaking with strange holograms, from a high performance sexy German hatchback to new Chinese cars based on old Italian ones, not even the strictest palate couldn't at least find something to begrudgingly swallow.

With all the excitement over the last few days you may have missed out something great or, at least, something terrible enough to be amusing.

Have no fear. Here's are all the stories from Detroit 2013 you need inside you.

(DETROIT) — When General Motors engineers and designers started work on the next-generation Corvette, they drew up the usual requirements for the star of American muscle cars.

Killer looks. Big engine. Handles like a race car.

But topping the list back was something at odds with the roar of the car’s big V-8: Gas mileage.

The new Corvette could not be a gas guzzler. Stricter government rules were forcing a leap in fuel economy. If the car burned too much gas, it would trigger fines from regulators and never get built.

“There won’t be a Corvette if we don’t care about fuel economy,” said Tadge Juechter, the car’s chief engineer.

But the 2014 Corvette is here, the first all-new version in nine years. The king of American sports cars, driven by astronauts and celebrated in a Prince song, rolled out Sunday night in Detroit. It will arrive in showrooms this fall.

To many fans, the new Corvette symbolizes the rebirth of America’s auto industry after its near death in 2009, showing the world that it again can lead in technology, styling and performance — at a lower cost that European competitors.

Getting there was tough for the 1,000-member Corvette team, which gave the car the code name “C7.” GM’s bankruptcy slowed development twice. With each delay, new safety and gas mileage regulations forced changes. The Corvette team overhauled the car: aluminum replaced steel, super-light rivets held parts together, and the V-8 engine kicked down to four cylinders at highway speeds, saving fuel.

All the changes helped it overcome nine years of government crash safety requirements that could have bloated the car. But even with the lighter materials, the regulations have pushed its weight to a little more than the current base model’s 3,200 pounds. Still, it’s an engineering achievement. The Corvette is so new that it only shares two parts with the current model.

GM said testing is still being done on the car’s fuel economy, but it’ll be better than the current base model’s 16 mpg in the city and 26 on the highway. Juechter said the window sticker highway mileage won’t reach 30 mpg, but he wouldn’t be surprised to see some drivers get that or more.

The car’s usual buyers — men in their mid-50s — will also notice dramatic changes on the outside of the two-seat car. The hood slopes low to slice through the wind. All the vents and scoops have functional purposes like cooling the brakes or transmission.

On the back, designers took cues from the1963 Corvette, with a sloping roof that tapers toward the bottom. The car has a small Stingray badge on each side, complete with gills. And there’s a more modern rendition of the Corvette’s crossed-flag logo.

A 6.2-liter small-block V-8 with 450 horsepower takes the car from zero to 60 mph in under four seconds. That’s at least a few tenths of a second faster than the current base model.

Engineers also redesigned the somewhat-chintzy interior, giving it a jet cockpit look with leather, carbon fiber and soft plastics.

GM hopes the styling, performance and updated dashboard electronics will expand the car’s appeal to younger buyers. The Corvette’s been a favorite of adrenaline junkies for 60 years. Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard owned one from the first year — 1953.

The company won’t quote a price on the 2014 model. But Juechter said someone who bought the current version can afford the new one. The Corvette starts at $49,600. That is more than $30,000 below what GM considers its chief competitor, the Porsche 911. The car makes a decent profit for GM despite relatively low sales, Juechter said.

Journalists surround General Motors new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, the night before press days at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

GM wouldn’t give sales targets for the new car. Last year it sold only 14,000 of the aging Corvettes, down from over 30,000 the first few years after the current version was rolled out. Porsche sold about 8,500 911s last year.

General Motors unveils its newly redesigned Corvette Stingray in a former industrial complex, Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, the night before press days at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The prospect of a new ‘Vette has fans waiting anxiously, browsing the Internet for unauthorized photos or drawings. Thousands of aficionados live in the U.S., and even Europe and the Middle East.

John Browning, 70, president of the Renegade Corvette Club of Hollywood, Fla., one of 600 such clubs in the U.S, said some Corvette lovers can’t contain themselves.

“I’ve got one member, he just sold his ’13 in anticipation, to wait for the ’14,” said Browning. “I think the Corvette is the icon. As far as I’m concerned you can’t get a better deal.”

This car just looks like the same old Corvette with a bit of cosmetic changes and some design changes taken from the Camero.  I thought they were going to come up with a whole new car like they did from 62-63 or 67-68 models.  It looks like a kit car to me.  Come on GM I wish you would had made the frame smaller and a whole new design change.  I can look at this car and tell it looks like a Corvette from last year.  I believe this will not spark any new interest.  The same old Corvette buyers will still buy it but GM needed something out of the box to attract new buyers and to me they played it safe and failed with the 2014 model.  The same kind of body will have the same kind of buyers.

These C7 Vettes won't hit the showrooms until third quarter 2013.  I bet the price for the basic Stingray will be mind blowing.    Anyone want to guess??   I would say the basic package Vette will be stickered at least $64K and the Z06 and ZR! will be $100K to $145K respectively.       I am not much on the CD6 Vettes, but a new basic 2013 you can pick up at dealer now for about $48K out the door.  They need to get rid of them fast for arrival of C7.  Personally I have owned C3, C4 and C5 vettes over the years.  But I have a C5 Targa Top triple torch red one now and the design and looks beat hell out of the C6 and the C7.  How do I know?  I rarely win less than First Place trophies in all the car shows my C5 is in.   I have a garage full of trophies on that car.    Actually out of 45 vettes in a recent show (Most all were C6's, )  I took the prize of First Place and Best Corvette.  I know I am bragging, but my point is I think the C5 design beats them all thus far.    Bob.

You can find a little bit of everything. Sides look like the GT-R , the front is similar to the 458 Italia, and the back is similar to the Camaro and also a bit of the 458 Italia (the mufflers), the interior is the same as the lamborghini murcielago...

I hope GM have fixed the problems with the engine on this model , as my current C6 one is Crap.

It always looks like a second class sport car.....come on guys/GM.....even though it is cheap sports car,  i never considered it for that reason....I still want to buy detroit's, my hometown cars.........

IMO the front and rear styles just don't mix. The front is nice, but the back just looks like the GM designers ran out of time and slapped a Camaro tail on it. The front has the hallmark Corvette sweep but the rear looks like the blocky, angular modern Camaro. Anyone else notice this too, or is it just me?

Also I'd gladly love to take one of these new Vettes. Still a handsome beast of a car no matter which way you look at it.

SD_Realtor 5pts

@51stafmonsta Yes, when I looked at the back end of the new Vette my first response was - where are the round taillights?  They just pulled the Camaro light design and plugged it into the Corvette - HUGE mistake to take one of the iconic portions of this car's design and remove it

Spectrespy 5pts

@51stafmonsta I agree about the Camaro Rear End.  In fact the Head guy for the Camaro re-design comeback also headed the re-design of the C7 Vette.    So all he did was slap a Camaro ass end on it.  The center point of the rear end is just like the Camaro as it is a slight semi V shape.  Also the tail lights were slipped square like the Camaro.   But it is still an awesome car and I want one.

Beautiful Car But Im still waiting for the Lexus LF-LC Series to come out  that or the Lamborghini Ankonian

You'll see owners replacing that grill soon enough, but the rest of the car looks good. Good thing GM put some thought into the interior, which has always been a weak point on the Vette.

Front is a little plain but the rear end ROCKS!!

eyekno1 5pts

The rear sucks!!  NO ORIGINALITY!! Let's just take the premier American sports car and hang the rearend from the 4 passenger family coupe Camero on it. Looks just like something from the little kiddie movie "Cars".

can anyone say 'Dodge Viper'?
